Saku University, commissioned by the Japan International Cooperation Agency（JICA）, conducted a “JICA Young Leaders for Afghanistan Maternal and Child Health Management Course 2017” for 18 participants（obstetricians, midwives and nurses）for two weeks from July 14, 2017 in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. In Afghanistan, a number of challenges in Afganistan were mentioned, such as shortage of human resources in the health and medical fi eld, great disparities between urban and local areas, lack of communication among professionals in medical institutions, and insuffi cient knowledge of mothers \nand other family members of maternal and child health. Problems include low birth weight infants, asphyxia, pneumonia, diarrhea, malnutrition, and postpartum hemorrhage, which can be prevented or improved through health education and better medical technology. In the evaluation questionnaire, participants mentioned that they can make use of the knowledge and skills they gained in Japan directly or apply them in the appropriate ways in their country.
