We conducted an interview survey with supervisors of each facility, and a questionnaire survey involving nursing staff (Facility A: n=37, Facility B: n=17). The following results were obtained:\r\n1) A greater level of satisfaction regarding deathbed care was found in those of Facility A than Facility B.\r\n2) Regarding challenges associated with end-of-life care, Facility A indicated a diffi culty in identifying the residents’intentions.\r\nFacility B indicated inadequate systems and a lack of human resources and equipment.\r\n3) Psychological support was of primary importance in end-of-life care.\r\n4) Regarding the sense of psychological distance, the nursing staff had a not-too-close or not-too-distant mental proximity to the\r\nresidents. They took a well-balanced (humanistic and technical) approach to care with compassion and affectionate regard, and\r\nwere willing to be present at the moment of death of the residents.\r\n5) Of those engaging in deathbed care, 40% did not provide care after death, because they did not see it as part of their roles. Care\r\nafter death (referred to as‘angel care’in Japan) serves as an opportunity to conceptualize life and death, and is an evaluation\r\nitem of nursing care. Nursing staff are, thus, expected to offer such care.\r\n6) End-of-life care is provided as a team.
